A Sterling Share Class Adds Digital Access

Aviva Investors announced on October 26 a tokenized share class of its Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger, working with Ripple. Aviva invested £50 million in the new class. The underlying fund has approximately £22 billion in assets, a figure that should be distinguished from the amount invested in this tokenized offering.

The structure uses a digital-twin model: holdings are represented onchain while the existing fund remains in place. Aviva says the class retains the conventional fund’s objective, risk profile and liquidity characteristics. Eligible investors access it using digital wallets, with Komainu and Licuido supporting the launch and BNY Mellon holding the underlying fund assets.

The Portfolio and Its Record Are Different Layers

A tokenized share class can change the way an investor’s holding is represented without moving every asset in the portfolio onto a blockchain. That is the central distinction in this launch. The digital record connects to an established fund rather than replacing the economic activity and custody arrangements behind it.

For institutions, that approach may make adoption easier to assess because the investment and the new distribution layer can be considered separately. A treasury team can examine the portfolio’s role while also understanding wallet eligibility, recordkeeping and the processes connecting the token representation with the fund’s existing operations.

Scale Needs the Right Denominator

Large fund assets often dominate tokenization headlines, but they do not measure how much money has entered a new digital share class. Aviva’s own allocation provides a more specific starting point. Keeping those figures separate makes future growth easier to evaluate and avoids treating an entire traditional fund as newly circulating onchain.

The same principle applies to liquidity. A blockchain can record activity continuously while a fund retains particular dealing and redemption arrangements. Investors need the terms of the actual class to understand when they can obtain cash, rather than assume that a digital representation makes every stage of an investment available at every moment.

The launch extends Aviva’s tokenization work from dollar to sterling liquidity exposure. Its significance is a concrete new access format with a disclosed initial investment, supported by identifiable service providers. The next useful evidence will be continued subscriptions, dependable processing and clear reporting at share-class level, showing whether the digital layer improves the experience of holding and administering an established investment fund.
