August 27 Bitcoin briefly breaks above $80,000 as a wave of short liquidations and strong ETF demand fuel another sharp crypto rally.
Bitcoin briefly pushed above $80,000 as hundreds of millions in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated.
Bitcoin returned above the $80,000 level on August 27 as the crypto market extended its recovery and leveraged short positions were caught on the wrong side of the move.
Bitcoin traded as high as roughly $80,800 during the session before settling closer to $79,000. Around $409 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated during the day, with short sellers accounting for the majority of the losses.
The move highlights how quickly leverage can amplify crypto market rallies.
Around $280 million of the day's liquidations came from short positions, according to market data cited in contemporary reports.
Ethereum and bitcoin shorts were among the biggest casualties as prices climbed across much of the market.
The move also came while institutional demand remained strong. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs had accumulated roughly $2.8 billion during an eight-day inflow streak.
Bitcoin's recovery from around $62,000 has been remarkably fast.
That puts $80,000 at the center of the market again. Breaking the level temporarily is one thing. Holding above it could be much more important.
Traders were also preparing for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech, which had the potential to quickly change expectations around U.S. interest rates.
Crypto is once again showing how quickly sentiment can shift when improving institutional demand meets heavily positioned derivatives markets.
Short squeezes can push prices higher extremely quickly, but they can also produce temporary moves that reverse when the forced buying disappears.
Bitcoin briefly reclaimed $80,000 as a powerful rally triggered more than $400 million in crypto liquidations.
The next question is whether genuine demand can keep BTC above the psychological level once the short squeeze ends.
