BNY and Citadel Securities Put Tokenized Treasuries to Work in Repo

A completed Treasury transaction connects digital settlement with overnight collateral financing on BNY’s platform.
BNY announced on October 13 that it completed a triparty repo workflow with Citadel Securities using a tokenized representation of a US Treasury. Citadel bought a two-year Treasury note through BNY on Tradeweb. A digital representation was recorded on BNY’s private ledger and settled within minutes, according to the bank, before serving as collateral for overnight financing.
BNY provided cash against that collateral. The bank describes the transaction as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. That is its stated milestone, tied to this particular workflow, rather than evidence that every Treasury transaction can now settle through the same arrangement.
A security can have several jobs during a trading day. It can be purchased as an investment, transferred into custody and then pledged to obtain short-term cash. Delays between those steps may leave a firm holding an asset it cannot yet use for its next obligation.
Our analysis is that this transaction matters because it connects settlement with a subsequent financing use. Tokenization becomes more economically interesting when an asset can move through several existing institutional processes, instead of remaining an isolated digital record. The value comes from making those processes work together reliably.
A repo is a financing arrangement with obligations on both sides. Faster representation or transfer does not eliminate the need to establish who controls the collateral, how it is valued and what happens if a counterparty fails. Those responsibilities remain part of the financial structure surrounding the token.
There is also a difference between a completed transaction and a broadly available market service. Institutions need operational documentation, appropriate access and confidence that the process can handle ordinary volumes and exceptional conditions. A successful example provides evidence of feasibility, while repeated use would provide a stronger test of resilience.
BNY says it plans additional digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities and expects to extend traditional settlement operating hours. Those are forward-looking steps. Their implementation will determine how far the connected workflow can expand. For now, the concrete result is a Treasury moving from execution and digital settlement into overnight funding, showing one way tokenized assets can participate in the existing financial system rather than sit alongside it as a separate experiment.
