Institutions bought the week retail sold

Combined weekly inflows into US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs reached approximately $1.1 billion through August 7.

BlackRock's IBIT accounted for around $853 million of that total, extending its dominance of the category.

Bitcoin ETFs recorded consecutive days of positive flows, a streak that softened only when prices stalled below the $65,000 area.

The macro trigger

The inflows followed weaker-than-expected US employment data.

Softer labour figures reduced expectations of further rate pressure, which historically supports risk assets and lengthens the runway for allocators considering new positions.

Rate expectations remain the dominant macro variable for crypto flows, and the next inflation print was already being treated as the key catalyst for the following week.

A two-speed market

Underneath the headline flows, the market split into two distinct behaviours.

The pattern looked like this:

  • majors traded in narrow ranges with muted volatility
  • institutional capital arrived through regulated wrappers
  • small-cap tokens produced triple-digit percentage moves
  • thin-float assets repriced violently on modest volume
  • leverage concentrated in the most speculative corners

Institutional money was flowing into the top of the market while retail activity chased the tail.

Sentiment did not follow the flows

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index remained in fear territory through the period, sitting in the low-to-mid 30s on most readings.

That disconnect is notable. Large allocations were being made into products designed for long holding periods at the same time as short-term traders were positioning defensively.

Flows and sentiment measure different populations, and in this period they pointed in opposite directions.

Concentration risk in the ETF complex

The dominance of a single issuer has become a structural feature of the market.

Considerations that follow from that concentration include:

  • fee competition compresses margins for smaller issuers
  • liquidity gravitates to the largest fund
  • smaller products struggle to reach viable scale
  • flow data becomes a proxy for one issuer's book
  • redemption dynamics concentrate in fewer venues

The category is consolidating even as total assets grow.

Flows reverse quickly

The streak did not last. Bitcoin ETF flows turned negative shortly afterward, with roughly $144 million in outflows recorded on August 10 as prices retreated.

The speed of the reversal is a reminder that ETF flows are momentum-sensitive rather than structurally sticky, and that a strong week does not establish a trend.

Why this matters

This matters because ETF flows have become the clearest available signal of institutional intent, and they are increasingly detached from what retail sentiment indicators show.

Reading the market now requires tracking two separate demand curves that can move in opposite directions at the same time.

The clean takeaway

US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs drew about $1.1 billion in the week to August 7, led by roughly $853 million into BlackRock's IBIT, while the Fear & Greed Index stayed in fear territory and small-cap tokens saw outsized speculative moves. Flows reversed within days, underlining how quickly institutional demand can turn.
