Iberdrola, BBVA and Santander use a shared ledger to administer a €150 million syndicated financing facility.
Iberdrola, BBVA and Santander announced a €150 million syndicated financing facility on October 15, using a platform developed by ioBuilders with the banks. The institutions describe it as a live syndicated loan whose full lifecycle is administered through distributed ledger technology, extending the system beyond signing and initial disbursement.
The platform records and coordinates events including interest calculations, repayments, contractual consents and transfers between lenders. Authorized participants share a synchronized record under the operational control of the agent bank. The announcement says the institutions intend to add participants and expand functionality following this first transaction.
A syndicated loan involves several parties maintaining a common understanding of one financing arrangement. That makes it a useful setting for shared records: a payment, consent or change of participation needs to be reflected consistently. The operational challenge is ensuring that each institution works from an agreed version of the same event.
A shared ledger could reduce the need to compare separate records repeatedly, but the result still depends on the quality of the information entered and the procedures around it. Technology can preserve an event record without deciding whether every underlying business instruction was correct. Clear authority and correction processes remain part of the service.
This transaction illustrates adoption through financial administration rather than a new token offered to the public. Its relevance can be evaluated through the work the platform performs during the loan’s lifetime: handling routine events, maintaining access controls and allowing different institutions to coordinate without losing track of their respective responsibilities.
The next step will be repeatability. One facility can demonstrate that a workflow is possible; broader use requires the system to fit the practices of additional participants and a wider range of contracts. More institutions also mean more requirements for onboarding, records access and agreement over how exceptional cases should be handled.
For the digital asset industry, the facility broadens the discussion of what blockchain-based finance can accomplish. Faster settlement is only one possible benefit. Shared administration may be just as important when a product lasts for years and generates many separate contractual events. Evidence of lasting value will come from dependable day-to-day operation and additional transactions using the infrastructure, rather than the size of a single announcement.
