Jobs Report Comes in at Triple the Estimate and Bitcoin Loses $80K Again

August payrolls of 162K versus ~55K expected revived Fed-hike fears, pulling Bitcoin off $81K as OpenReserve wins provisional bank approval and the BIS tests XRPL.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 162,000 new jobs in August against a consensus near 55,000, with unemployment at 4.1%. Initial claims for the week ending 29 August were 206,000, inside the range that has held all year, and August layoff announcements were the lowest for the month since 2022.
Bitcoin, which had squeezed to $81,000 on Thursday's Waller-driven rally, slipped back below $80,000. Traders repriced the 16 September FOMC toward a hike. The ETF buyers who bought Thursday's $731 million did so above $80,000; the level holds only if they keep adding on dips.
Blockchain-native OpenReserve received provisional approval for a US national bank charter. Additional regulatory and operational conditions remain, but it marks another crypto-native firm moving toward full banking supervision, following Circle's final OCC approval in July and conditional approvals for Ripple, Paxos, BitGo and Fidelity Digital Assets.
Researchers at the Bank for International Settlements published a proof of concept using the XRP Ledger to store cryptographic fingerprints of official statistics such as GDP and inflation, so anyone can verify the data was not altered after publication. It is research, not a production system, but it shows central bankers exploring blockchains beyond payments.
The macro picture is a labour market that is holding up without accelerating, which argues for a pause as much as a hike. But Warsh's speech plus a hot payroll print means the market is now trading the hike scenario, and Bitcoin is stuck between strong institutional demand and a rising discount rate.
