A derivatives route to continuous exposure

Ripple announced on October 15 that Ripple Prime launched support for real-world asset perpetual swaps for institutional clients. The company says clients including Virtu are trading products referencing more than 100 markets across equities, indices, ETFs, metals, energy and foreign exchange. Trading and settlement are available around the clock, according to the announcement.

Ripple Prime acts as principal to the client, while the swaps reference perpetual futures listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid. The company also describes cross-margining with other supported exposures and the use of RLUSD as collateral. These are derivative exposures, rather than a transfer of direct ownership in every referenced stock, commodity or other underlying asset.

Longer hours change the operating problem

A continuous derivatives market can allow a participant to respond while the conventional market for the reference asset is closed. That creates flexibility, but it also raises questions about pricing, liquidity and how a position is managed when the primary market is unavailable.

Our interpretation is that access and risk management need to be evaluated together. An institution may gain more time to adjust an exposure, while also needing staff, systems and collateral procedures capable of responding outside familiar market hours. Continuous availability is a property of the service, not a promise that conditions remain equally liquid at every moment.

The counterparty remains part of the exposure

The structure also matters for understanding who faces whom. A client relationship with a prime broker is different from directly holding a position on an onchain venue. The contract terms, collateral arrangements and responsibilities of the intermediary help define the actual exposure.

Cross-margining can bring positions into one risk framework, but its usefulness depends on the rules used to value and offset them. A consolidated collateral pool should be understood through the terms governing it, including how requirements change during volatile periods. Convenience alone does not describe those mechanics.

The useful next disclosures concern the specific product documentation and evidence of sustained institutional use. The announcement establishes a live expansion of Ripple Prime’s stated offering, but it does not provide a basis for predicting demand or returns. For the broader market, it shows another way conventional asset exposure is being delivered through digital trading infrastructure, with the economic result still shaped by the derivative contract, market conditions and the complete counterparty arrangement.
