A difficult month for security

Crypto security trackers reported roughly $768 million in losses during September, making it a particularly damaging month. CoinMarketCap’s reporting cited CertiK’s estimate of $768.4 million across 97 incidents and a separate PeckShield estimate of about $766.5 million across 55 major events.

Those figures describe overlapping activity measured with different methodologies. They should not be added together, and their incident counts are not directly interchangeable.

A headline total hides different failures

Losses can arise from compromised credentials, flawed smart contracts, malicious approvals or failures at a centralised service. Each route creates a different problem to investigate and repair.

A large monthly total does not establish that every blockchain or custody method failed in the same way. The useful follow-up is to identify how individual incidents occurred and whether the affected controls have changed.

Recovery is a separate measure

Funds traced on a public ledger are not necessarily funds returned to their owners. Freezing assets, negotiating a return and completing reimbursement involve different parties and different uncertainties.

Reports may also revise totals as investigators learn more. Readers should distinguish the initial estimate, recovered amounts and confirmed customer losses.

What the numbers reveal

The September reports underline how operational security can dominate market outcomes. Price gains do not compensate for losing access to assets. Transparent incident reporting and evidence that the underlying failure has been addressed are more useful than broad assurances after an attack.
