Soneum is officially live.

There’s a lot of speculation about what this could mean for the billion-dollar legacy Sony brand.

Sure, Sony is great. However, Web3 gamers are more interested in answering how this will impact PlayStation and its intellectual property.

Let’s see what Soneium means and what’s officially on-chain. 👇

The Launch Story

Sony Block Solutions Labs is officially diving deep into the blockchain waters.

Their testnet phase pulled in 14 million users and handled 47 million transactions.

That's impressive and a clear signal Sony is taking this seriously.

The network aims to support everything from gaming to film and music.

But it's the gaming angle that's got everyone talking.

What's Actually on the Chain?

Right now, Soneium's got about a dozen games cooking.

There's Derby Race, letting players earn from horse racing picks on Telegram, and OverTrip, mixing battle royale action with crypto mechanics.

But none of these games actually come from Sony or their partner Startale Labs.

Anyone can build on Soneium, just like any other blockchain.

These early games might seem small compared to PlayStation hits, but they're testing grounds for what's possible when gaming meets Web3.

The PlayStation Question

Things get fascinating when we consider that Sony's filed patents for tracking game items with NFTs and something called "super-fungible tokens" for bundling digital goods.

But when asked about PlayStation plans, Sony BSL kept it cool: "We're excited about the possibilities, but nothing specific to share."

The patents tell a bigger story, though. Sony is clearly thinking about how blockchain could change gaming – from tracking rare items to creating new types of digital collectibles.

But getting blockchain into console gaming isn't simple.

You've got regulators watching every move, players who hate complicated crypto stuff, and the challenge of making it all feel natural in a PlayStation game.

Take Off the Grid, which is a PS5 game testing blockchain features. Even they admit the console version needs special handling compared to PC.

It's one thing to make blockchain games – it's another to make them work on consoles.

Sony Playing it Safe

While rumors fly about GTA 6 going crypto, big publishers are walking on eggshells.

Rockstar banned crypto transactions from GTA 5 servers, and Sony's already blocking PlayStation-themed meme coins on Soneium.

This approach is in place to actively protect their brand, which, for better or worse, they're putting above short-term meme coin gains.

This careful approach might frustrate meme coin traders, but it shows Sony understands what's at stake.

The PlayStation brand is worth billions, and they can't risk damaging it with meme coins that may or may not violate securities law.

Where Could Sony Go On-Chain From Here?

Sony is creating infrastructure for the future of digital entertainment.

Soneium could become the backbone for everything from in-game items to digital movie collectibles.

With GameFi still young and finding its footing, this is a massive development for the niche.

Think about PlayStation's massive digital library. If Sony figured out how to tokenize game ownership or create tradeable in-game items, it could change how millions of players think about their digital purchases.

Sony is building serious infrastructure here.

Soneium might not hook into PlayStation today, but it's laying the groundwork for something bigger.

The real test isn't whether blockchain gaming works. It's whether Sony can make it work for PlayStation's massive player base.

While PlayStation players won't see crypto wallets pop up tomorrow, Sony's moves with Soneium suggest they're thinking way ahead.
