A new study examines how issuers, custodians and governance systems would need to coordinate a security transition.

A wider view of the problem

A research paper released on October 1 examines stablecoins in a potential post-quantum environment. The study, titled SoK: Stablecoins in the Quantum Era, looks beyond the cryptography of an individual blockchain to the wider system supporting a token.

It considers dependencies involving issuers, custodians, governance, bridges and other infrastructure. The paper is a risk framework, not evidence that a practical attack against today’s stablecoins has already occurred.

Upgrading one component may not be enough

A stablecoin can depend on several sets of keys and permissions. Changing the signature scheme on one network would not automatically update a custodian’s procedures, an issuer’s administrative controls or a bridge connecting two systems.

That makes coordination a central part of migration. The organisations responsible for an upgrade may not be the same parties that bear the losses if it is delayed or implemented badly.

Continuity matters during a transition

A security change also has to preserve basic functions such as transfers and redemption. A technically stronger system that leaves users unable to access funds creates a different operational problem.

Planning therefore includes identifying dependencies, deciding who can authorise changes and testing recovery procedures. Clear responsibilities can be valuable before a specific transition date is known.

Research is not a countdown

The study adds structure to a long-term security discussion. It should not be read as a forecast of an imminent break in cryptography. Its practical contribution is to show why stablecoin resilience depends on coordinated institutions as well as the code securing a token.
