Warsh's First Jackson Hole Speech Wipes Out Bitcoin's Rally in a Day

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish debut at Jackson Hole flipped rate-cut odds, sent Bitcoin from $81K to $77K and ended a nine-day ETF inflow streak.
Bitcoin came into Friday at a two-year high pace. It touched $81,455 on Thursday on the back of strong Nvidia earnings and a week of steady ETF buying. Then Kevin Warsh took the stage in Wyoming for his first Jackson Hole keynote as Fed Chair, and by the close Bitcoin was at $77,838 after an intraday low near $76,900. Ethereum slid to $2,443, Solana lost almost 5% to $104 and XRP dropped near $1.38.
Three lines did the damage. He described current financial conditions as not restrictive, which markets read as "credit is too easy for a cut." He said forward guidance had overstayed its welcome, telling traders to stop looking to the Fed for hints. And he owned the inflation record: PCE at 3.7% year on year, more than five years above the 2% target, with the Fed having "work to do" if underlying inflation does not move fast enough.
CME FedWatch went from roughly 88% odds of a September cut before the speech to about 40% after. Rate-hike odds jumped from 35% to around 60%. The 2-year Treasury yield rose 12 basis points to 4.35%. Around $488 million of crypto positions were liquidated, including $138 million of Bitcoin longs. Total crypto market cap fell roughly 3% on the day.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs had logged nine consecutive days of inflows and briefly pushed the category above $100 billion in assets. Friday brought $202 million of outflows, the biggest single-day exit in over a month, led by ARKB, BITB and IBIT together rather than one fund.
The August rally was built on lower regulatory risk (the SEC's Regulation Crypto Assets proposal, the White House crypto summit) plus expected liquidity from Treasury buybacks. Warsh did not reverse any of that. He reintroduced monetary uncertainty that the market had stopped pricing. The two dates now doing all the work are the CLARITY Act Senate vote on 15 September and the FOMC decision on 16 September.
