A strategic raise with a hard lockup

The round was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital and Susquehanna Crypto. All WLD tokens purchased in the sale are subject to a 12-month lockup, preventing immediate resale by investors.

That structure matters. A locked, strategic sale to name-brand funds signals longer-term conviction rather than quick-flip positioning, and it gives the foundation fresh capital without adding immediate sell pressure to the market.

Funding the expansion of World ID

According to The Coin Republic, the funds will support the expansion of World ID, the project's proof-of-personhood system, across business platforms, consumer applications and AI services.

The network's scale has grown considerably since its July 2023 launch. More than 39 million people have joined World Network, over 18 million have completed Orb iris verification, and 475 million identity proofs have been processed. Recent World ID integrations include Zoom, DocuSign, Tinder, Okta and Vercel.

Pantera Capital general partner Cosmo Jiang framed the thesis simply, noting that proof-of-human technology is gaining relevance as artificial intelligence develops.

The token didn't celebrate

Despite the funding news, WLD's price action was muted. The token traded around $0.344 at the time of FXStreet's report, down roughly 10% over the prior 24 hours, and the announcement failed to trigger a sustained rebound.

There was, however, another notable development the same week: Grayscale filed an S-1 registration on July 20 for a proposed spot Worldcoin ETF, opening a potential path to a US-listed WLD product.

Why this matters for the market

Identity is becoming one of crypto's most strategically important verticals as AI-generated content and bots proliferate. A $52.5 million commitment from firms like Pantera, Bain Capital Crypto and Susquehanna, locked for a year, is one of the stronger institutional votes of confidence the proof-of-personhood sector has received.

The Grayscale ETF filing adds a second institutional thread: if approved, it would give traditional investors regulated exposure to a project whose core product is not payments or DeFi, but verified humanity.

Growth continues, scrutiny remains

World Network keeps scaling, but the project still faces regulatory scrutiny over its biometric data handling in multiple jurisdictions, and the token's weak price response shows the market wants adoption metrics to translate into value.

With fresh capital, major integrations, and a possible ETF on the horizon, the next year will test whether proof-of-personhood can move from a niche experiment to core internet infrastructure.
